Preity's Zinta's interviews
Preity Zinta

From Sanyukta, Seasons Correspondent.
Preity Zinta is on cloud nine these days. Close on the heels of Kya Kehna, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega has been declared a huge hit and is entering its silver Jubilee week in more than fifty theatres across the country. Most attribute the success of this film to zingy Zinta's dimpled presence than Rani's bubbly charm or Salman's shirtless antics with sexy babes. In fact, most critics and trade pundits feel that the Soldier girl has overshadowed the Ghulam girl in all respects, be it acting, dialogue delivery, good looks or mere screen presence. Not surprisingly, Preity was in an ecstatic mood, celebrating the success of HDJPK at a city hotel with her co-stars recently, when we caught up with her for a tete-a-tete.

I and Rani are close friends ...
and there is no competition or rivalry
Har Dil… is a love triangle then how is it that you got more benefit from the film?

Filmmaking is a teamwork and HDJPK is no exception. More than the stars, it is the director who makes or breaks a film. We do the singing, acting, dancing but the soul comes from the director, so there is no question of one actor deriving more benefit than the other.

But isn't it true that behind the façade of friendship there is some amount of rivalry between you and Rani?
I and Rani are close friends and there is no competition or rivalry between as is being projected. Rani is down-to-earth and we have excellent rapport. We are doing one more film - Chori Chori Chupke Chupke together which is complete but unfortunately holed up in controversy.

Some have gone to the extent of linking you with him?

It is just one of those rumours, which is a part of this industry. I am good friends with Govinda but that does not mean I am having an affair with him. My life is like an open book and I have nothing to hide. If I have a man in my life, I will go ahead and tell the world about him.

What about Salman, you have good rapport with him?
Contrary to what people say, I found Salman sweet and supportive. I have good rapport with him and he is spontaneous before the camera. There are many occasions when he has helped me out in difficult situations. Actually, most people misunderstand his wacky sense of humour.

How was it working with Hrithik in Mission Kashmir?

Mission Kashmir is very close to reality and that makes the subject fascinating. Hrithik is cool as a co-star and natural before the camera. I like his dedication towards his work.

But Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the director of Mission Kashmir, is said to be difficult to work with?
I wonder who spreads such tales. I did not have any bad experience with him and I learnt a lot from him.

How is it that with only a handful of releases like Dil Se, Soldier, Sanghursh, Kya Kehna and HDJPK you have made it to the top?
I have never made a conscious effort to shape up my career in a particular way. I sign films by instinct and I am careful about my role.

Does that mean that you are not concerned about the box-office fate of a film?
I have never really thought about it. I signed Dil Se though everybody warned me that I will have nothing to do with Shah Rukh and Manisha around. I signed Sanghursh though it was not in the usual commercial mould. Kya Kehna was about an unwed mother, which in itself was a bold subject. If the role appeals to me and I feel there is some potential in it, I do it.

Then how would you justify the fact that Govinda has stopped promoting Rani and is promoting you instead?

I am doing only one film Tere Ishq Mein Pad Gaya Re with Govinda. Contrary to whatever is said and written about I am not doing many films with Chi Chi though lot of offers are coming my way. I enjoy working with him but I am careful about my role. I don't think my decision to sign a film with him or not will affect anybody.

Do you have a dream role in mind?
I do not believe in all that. For me every role is a dream role. Till now all the roles that I have done are an experience in their own right.

You have a masters in criminal psychology, how do you find working in Bollywood masala flicks?
Our films present crime in a stylised manner and that attracts youth towards it. This is a very serious trend. However, I do like films like Satya, which are an eye-opener in this regard.

To what extent you can compromise to get a role?

I have heard a lot about people going to any extent to get a role. But I don't believe in it. I believe in working your way to the top.

Do you get upset easily?

Usually I do not get upset, but sometimes even a small issue say my pet dog spoiling my bed can upset my mood than a serious issue.

Do you miss being normal now that you are a big star?

I enjoy my life to the hilt. But I hate playing perfect all the time. As a star you are expected to be nice and smile back at people all the time, I can't do that. But success has not changed by basic values.

If you were to search for Mr Right what would you look for?

I would look for a normal human being who's emotional in nature.

Do you have anyone in mind…
As I told you, I won't mind declaring when I have one.

What is it that your close ones dislike in you?

My mother dislikes my sleeping habits. She does not like me sleeping late and getting up late. But I can't help it.

Did you have a fight with your friend Anupama Verma?
She was my closest friend when I came to Mumbai and joined Bollywood. She was doing Grahan with Jackie Shroff but the film is still in the making, that has stalled her career. This is a passing phase and she has bright future. We are still in touch with each other.

Which are your forthcoming films?
Apart from all the earlier mentioned films, Raj Kanwar's Farz with Sunny which has just been released and Deepak Shivdasani's Yeh Raaste Hai Pyar Ke with Ajay Devgan and Madhuri and a couple of others
